Did the “pre-life” Supreme Court justices just commit a mortal sin?

Jesus Christ was a victim of capital punishment

… divorced Catholic Clarence Thomas delivered the verdict

Make no mistake about it. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev deserves the death penalty for the devastation that he inflicted in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. In fact, he deserves to be tortured and hanged by his toenails, too.

Morality, though, is based not on the word of men, but upon the word of God as espoused by Jesus Christ.

The words of the Ten Commandments are clear: “Thou shalt not kill.”

Thou refers to people, it refers to states that inflict casualties like Russia is doing right now, like the U.S. did in Iraq in a un-Christian, unjust war, and it refers to the idea that life is precious.

Conservatives love to talk about life being sacred. That is, unless it is not, and six of the anti-abortion justices on the court, which I have characterized as being the worst since the Dred Scott decision, decided that life is not sacred.

See, these people inject the word “innocent” human life into the mix. And they love to insist that a fetus, which is not a human being, can have the rights of an American citizen.

This should seem strange to a student in middle school. For those who claim to be administering justice, it is also immoral because they are violating Christian tenets in doing so, and violating the law that of the church to which five of them belong — and the the other who is a fallen-away Catholic.

They reimposed the death penalty for Tsarnaev, which means that they are authorizing someone to take the life of another.

That is immoral and un-Christian.

What did Jesus do? “Let he who is without sin … “

During his lifetime, Jesus Christ was faced with making a decision about a capital offense. This is how he reacted,

Many forget that Jesus once served as a one-man jury on a death-penalty case. In a famous New Testament story, an adulterous woman was dragged to Jesus’ feet. The woman was guilty of a capital offense and had been caught in the act by at least one witness. The law mandated her death but Jesus prescribed a different response: “Let whoever is without sin cast the first stone.”

He was teaching that only a perfect being—only God—should have power over death and life.

Jonathan Merritt, “Would Jesus Support the Death Penalty?” The Atlantic/Reuters, May 2, 2014

Conservative Christians like Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II strongly opposed the death penalty. However, a majority of Americans still support it despite the obvious immorality and the fact that hundreds of people on death row have been freed because of DNA,

As of January 2020, the Innocence Project has documented over 375 DNA exonerations in the United States. Twenty-one of these exonerees had previously been sentenced to death. The vast majority (97%) of these people were wrongfully convicted of committing sexual assault and/or murder.

Here are the words of Jesus about mercy,

The Bible notes that one of the seven things God hates is the “shedding of innocent blood.” And Jesus said, “If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent” in Matthew 12:7.

That also means that many innocent people have likely been executed, but these “life supporters” — ignore morality when it does not fit their ideological narrative.

For those alleged bloodthirsty “Christians”

So many people say that they embrace Jesus Christ as their savior, yet they never read the New Testament.

Why they cannot see the injustice that was done by Jesus Christ’s execution as capital punishment — is beyond me.

Jesus, most of the Apostles, and most of the early martyrs of the faith were victims of inconsistent justice systems that allowed for capital punishment.

Many Christians strangely believe that Jesus wouldn’t support the death penalty even though they do. As this issue moves back to the fore of American public life, they will have to rectify this inconsistency and determine if they can take the position they believe Jesus would.

Jonathan Merritt, The Atlantic, May 2, 2014

The irony of these supposed “pro-life” Christians is that they also support war and actually embrace it. Again, they never read Jesus’ words in the New Testament.

How does the Catholic Church react to justices like these five who profess to belong to the church?

The Catechism outlines the church’s belief on what they believe on life issues, and this was approved by the very conservative John Paul II,

The Catholic Church  proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is  the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of  all the principles of our social teaching.

In our society, human life is under  direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human life is being  threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death  penalty.

The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means.

We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, USCCB

I feel for the victims and families

This does not mean that I do not feel for the horrific pain and suffering of the families involved, just as I feel for the innocent people who are being killed in Ukraine and were killed in Iraq.

These guys deserve to die, but the morality of taking a life is clear in Christian morality.

And these justices, were they do die tonight, would have one helluva time explaining that decision to God as they beg to enter heaven.

And they are going to have to beg because they will go to communion this weekend without having confessed this sin.

And that is another mortal sin.
